Selo/village Antonivka (Антонівка in Ukrainian)  is  a Hutsul*** village that is very small and  belongs to the cluster village of Olesha, with which it shares the post office and village administration >  Tlumach raion/district > Ivano-Frankivska  oblast/region > Ukraine, latest zip code is 78011.  Population  of Antonivka today is 307.

Your ancestral selo was founded on the left bank of the Dniester River in 1750, approximately 25 kilometers from Ivano-Frankivsj, the regional center.  It was first documented in  1825.  It emerged in history when the  Tartars attacked it and its surrounding villages, killing many villagers in 1594.

There are several archeaological sites here where Trypillian Culture flints have been found.  That would indicate  that there was human settlement here dating as far back as 5500BC.

The Trypillian people were an agrarian group, who invented the very first indoor stove. They were the first  bread bakers. The Trypillian Civilization was a Neolithic Bronze Age culture, scientifically dated 5500BC-2750BC.

There is extensive evidence of these people, living in the Western Carpathian Mountains  spanning to the  Dnieper River , encompassing regions mostly in modern Ukraine, and some in Moldova and Romania.  At its peak, the Trypillians built the largest Neolithic settlements on the continent that would be Europe,  some of which had populations of up to 15,000 people. One of the most notable things about this civilization  was that every 80 yrs or so, they would burn the settlements and rebuild, preserving layer upon layer of scientific data.

Trypillian society was matriarchal, with women heading the household, doing agricultural work, and  manufacturing pottery, textiles and clothing. Hunting, keeping domestic animals and making tools were  the responsibilities of the men. The primary deity of this ancient population was female. The Trypillian  culture developed a rich symbolic system based on their religious beliefs of the Great Goddess as the  powerful giver and regenerator of life and the wielder of death.

Just to give you a feel for the time frame, the Egyptian Predynastic Pharoah Period only goes back to 3200 BC  and your ancestral area saw sophisticated human settlement 2000 yrs before that.

The most  famous Antonivka resident, Stephen Terlecki, emigrated to England and became the first Ukrianian to serve  in the British Parliament and Advisor to Margaret Thatcher.  He was also a member of the Council of Europe.  Additionally, the very beloved Ukrainian poetess, Marya Pidhoryanka, was also a resident of the village.

The wooden Church of St. Demetrius was built in 1903 and stands today as an architectural monument.

*** HUTSUL.  The Hutsul people were/are a micro-ethnic Ruthenian group. Hutsuls identify themselves as a  part of Ukrainian ethnicity, at the same time having their local identity as a sub-ethnos.

They are a vibrant people They are superlative craftsmen of embroidery, sculpture, architecture, woodworking,  metalworking, rug weaving, pottery, and egg decorating and their music is joyous.

There are several annual Hutsul Festivals throughout this area, that attract travelers from around the world.

The Region where Hutsul lived/live is still referred to informally as Hutschulschyna.
