Your Grandparents were Boyko!

The Boyko/Bojko are a distinctive micro-ethnic group of Ukrainian Carpathian  Montagnards of the Carpathian highlands. The Boykos inhabited the central and the western half of the Carpathians in Ukraine, including the Dolynskij and a part of the Rozhniativakisj raions/district > Ivano-Frankivska oblast/region, theSkolivskij , Turkivskij, and parts of theDrohobytskij, Sambirskij and Starosambirskij raions > Lvivska oblast, and parts of the Mizhirskij raion >Zakarpatska oblast as well as the adjacent areas of SE Poland and NE Slovakia.

In recent times some scholars have claimed that this group is a part of Rusyn ethnos. However, the Boykos call themselves Ukrainians. Indeed, in the 19th century and in the first part of the 20th century Boykos, as well as most of the population of the present day's Western Ukraine called themselves Ruthenians/Rusyny (pronounced RU-TEENY, not Russiany). Then the term UKRAINIAN, that replaced the term RUTHENIAN in Eastern Ukraine a century earlier, became more common among Western Ruthenians/Ukrainians, including Boykos, as well. According to the recent census practically all Boykos in Ukraine declared their ethnicity as Ukrainian.

The name, BOYKO is thought by some to originate in their patterns of speech, specifically the use of the expression, "bah!".

Most Boykos belong to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, with a minority belonging to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The distinctive wooden church architecture of the Boyko region is a three-domed church, with the domes arranged in one line, and the middle dome slightly larger than the others.

Today Baba Paulina’s selo/village is called Myslivka (Мислівка) !

This small village of approximately 300 people was settled

by Austrian Colonists in the 19th century. Originally the village

was called Bryaza and later became Ludwokowka.  It was known

as a predominantly German village. During WW2 (1939) they were

evacuated and the buildings (metal manufacturing) and homes

were taken over by the local Ruthenian villagers. 

From late 18^th century to 1919 wies/village Ludwikowka

(called until 1939) was hamlet size, very small. The filial Greek

Catholic and Roman Catholic Church was in Weldzirz (today called Shevchenkove).  Dolyna was both the POWIAT/administrative

district – county and the GMINA/judicial-tax district > Stanislawowski (Stanislawow) wojiwodstwo/region > Galicia/Halyczyna (Ukr name) Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the AUSTRO- HUNGARIAN EMPIRE.  In 1919 this region declared independence, but that did not last long.  From 1920-1939 this region came under Reconstituted Poland’s domain.  Technically Poland had not existed as a geopolitical entity for the previous 125 years. All previous place names, except when otherwise indicated official Polish names. Post World War 2 this region became a part of SSR Ukraine, under Soviet domain

until 1991, when Ukraine became independent.

Today Grandfather’s selo still exists and is called Vyshkiv (Вишків).

Vyshkiv was settled on the Myzunka River, approximately 45 km

from Dolyna, the district center. All other authority same as above. 

Today Vyshkiv and Myslivka are under the same Village Administration.

The villages are 12 kms apart.

This is beautiful Subcarpathia.  The villages are surrounded by magnificent forests, where fat berries and big white mushrooms grow.  Wolves have been reintroduced and one can frequently see bears, deer and fox.  The area contains many small mineral springs.

Tourism is an important industry here.
