Kosteski

Kosteski/Kostecki/Kosteczki???

This is a surname that can be Polish (Kosteski or Kostecki) or Ukrainian (Костецький).

What religion did GGrandfather practice?  Did he consider himself Polish or Ukrainian?

LDS has filmed Terebovlya church records!!!  Have you ever used the LDS Library to do family research?  There are convenient centers all over Argentina.  Ask Olga Pita, member here to help you.  She can provide information as to the best location for you.

Kirchenbuch, 1854-1855  Österreich. Armee. Feldspital 16.  Austrian Miliatry stationed here.

Kopie księg metrykalnych, 1863-1921  Kościół grecko-katolicki/Greek Catholic.  Parafja Trembowla (Trembowla)

Metrical books, 1784-1944  Roman Catholic Church. Trembowla (Trembowla)

Terebovlya is a fair size town of 15/16,000 people.  It is the district center in the Ternopilska oblast.

I looked at the immigrants w/this same surname in the Ellis Island Records. Some were Polish and some were Ruthenian/Ukrainian.  I did not see anyone emigrating from turn of the century Trembovlya (later  Terebovlya), but there were some coming from Vyshnivchyk, Ostrivets, Dolyna,  Warwaryntsi, Sokoliv, Mykylyntsi and Budaniv, all villages in the Terebovlyanska district > Tarnipol region???

Thanks for ansewering my request. My grandfathers were members of the Greek  Catholic Church, and until now my family preserve ukrainian traditions. I have already asked in LDS Library:
weddings in Zascinosze. My great - grandfather was born there and moved to Humnyska. His parents lived in Zascinosze up to their deaths. Do you know how can I contact people living now in Ukraine?

Яків Костецький from Zastinoche/Застіноче & Humnyska/Гумниська
Modified By Hannia on 8/27/2008 1:37:58 AM)

It is my pleasure to meet people like you !_________________________________________

From late 18th century to 1919 your ancestral wies/village Zascinocze was hamlet size.  The village name is first mentioned in 1471 and means BEHIND THE WALLS.  It was settled on the banks of the Seret River. The filial Greek Catholic Church was in Ostrowczyk and the filial Roman Catholic Church was in Trembowlya.  Trembowlya was both the POWIAT/administrative district-county and GMINA/judicial-tax district.  Galicia/Halyczyna Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. From 1919-1939 Tarnipolska  wojiwodstwo/region came under Reconstituted Poland's domain.  Technically for the previous 125 years, Poland had not existed as a geopolitical entity. Post WW2 this region became a part of SSR Ukraine, under Soviet domain, until 1991, when Ukraine became independent. (Trembowlya became Terebovlya in 1939.)

Today selo Zastinoche/село Застіноче still exists with a population
of 489 people.  There is an archaeological site of the Trypillian Culture
(5400-2750 BC) located nearby. The village continues to share the GC
Church and post office in Ostrivets (formerly Ostrowczyk) / Острівець.
The Village Administration is also located in Ostrivets.

Consider writing the Village Mayor in Ostrivets and making an inquiry regarding any surviving relatives still living in Zastinoche/Застіноче and Humnyska/Гумниська.  They are part of the SAME Village Administration. Humnyska had/has its own Greek Catholic Church.  Population is 680. On local level, communicating in Ukrainian is ideal.

Why not make a whole family tree?  LDS has copied GC Church Records.
